Artificial Turf – FAQ & Product Safety
Our goal is to be transparent, factual, and clear about the materials we use and how our turf products perform in real-world environments. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive, including concerns around chemicals, safety, and PFAS.
Is artificial turf safe?
Yes. The artificial turf we install is designed for residential and commercial use and meets applicable safety and manufacturing standards. It is engineered to be non-toxic, durable, and safe for everyday activities such as walking, playing, and landscaping use.
Does your turf contain dangerous chemicals?
No. A common misconception is that all artificial turf contains harmful or hazardous chemicals. The turf products we use are manufactured with modern materials that are tested for safety and compliance.
Our turf does not contain known hazardous substances at levels that pose a risk under normal use conditions.
Does your turf contain PFAS ("forever chemicals")?
No. The turf products we use are PFAS-free.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are sometimes referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment. There has been growing concern about PFAS in various consumer products.
We specifically source turf products that do not contain intentionally added PFAS and are manufactured without fluorinated chemicals.
Why do people think turf contains toxic chemicals?
This concern largely comes from:
- Older generations of turf products
- Recycled rubber infill used in some athletic fields
- Misinformation or generalized reports that do not apply to modern residential turf systems
Today's turf materials and infill options have significantly evolved and are subject to stricter manufacturing controls.
Is artificial turf safe for children and pets?
Yes. The turf we use is designed to be family- and pet-friendly. It does not splinter, contains no sharp edges, and does not require chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
For pet applications, turf systems are designed with proper drainage and odor control in mind.
Does artificial turf get hot?
Artificial turf can become warmer than natural grass under direct sunlight. This is a known characteristic of synthetic surfaces.
Mitigation options include:
- Light water misting on hot days
- Shade structures or trees
- Selecting lighter-colored or heat-reflective turf products
Is artificial turf environmentally responsible?
Artificial turf can reduce environmental impact by:
- Eliminating the need for watering
- Removing the use of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides
- Reducing maintenance equipment emissions
Additionally, PFAS-free and modern turf materials are designed with sustainability and longevity in mind.
Does turf break down into microplastics?
All synthetic products experience wear over long periods of time. However, high-quality turf fibers are engineered to resist UV degradation and excessive shedding.
Proper installation and maintenance significantly reduce long-term material breakdown.
How long does artificial turf last?
With proper installation and normal use, artificial turf typically lasts 10–15 years or longer, depending on usage and environmental conditions.
Is your turf tested or certified?
Our turf products are sourced from reputable manufacturers that perform third-party testing for:
- Material safety
- Durability
- UV resistance
- Heavy metal and chemical content
